How to Apply for TANF in New Mexico
New Mexico calls its TANF program NMWorks, and unlike most states it's now run through the Health Care Authority (HCA) rather than the old Human Services Department, after a state agency reorganization moved economic assistance programs under HCA's Income Support Division. Applications go through the YesNM online portal, and after you apply you're called in for an interview about ten days later where a caseworker builds a list of documents you still need to provide.

Check basic eligibility
You must live in New Mexico, fall under the program's income and resource limits, and have dependent children 18 or younger who are citizens or have eligible non-citizen status (18-year-olds must be full-time high school students expected to graduate by month's end).

Apply through YesNM
Submit your application online through the YesNM portal at yes.state.nm.us, linked directly from the TANF page on hca.nm.gov.

Attend your interview
About ten days after applying, you'll be asked to come in for an interview. Your worker will give you a list of documents to bring — bring as much as you can to help move things along faster.

Provide any additional documentation requested
If your worker needs more information after the interview, they'll give you a list and a deadline; let them know right away if you need more time or help getting something.

Get your decision and start receiving benefits
You'll be notified by letter within 30 days on whether your cash assistance was approved. If approved, your monthly allotment is deposited onto an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card you can use like a debit card.
