How to Apply for TANF in Ohio

Ohio's TANF cash program is called Ohio Works First (OWF), and unlike a lot of states it caps benefits at just 36 months rather than the federal 60-month maximum. Applications go through the Ohio Benefits Self-Service Portal (an OHID-based account system shared with SNAP, Medicaid, and child care assistance) or your county Job and Family Services (CDJFS) office directly, since Ohio delivers most public assistance at the county level even though the state sets the rules. If you're approved, benefits arrive on the Ohio Way2Go prepaid card or by direct deposit.

   Apply online, by phone, mail, fax, or in person

   Create or access an account at ssp.benefits.ohio.gov, call 844-640-6446, or mail, fax, or hand-deliver a completed JFS Form 07200 to your county JFS office.

   Complete the application with at least your basics

   Fill out as much as you can, but be sure to include your full name, address, and signature; you can leave unclear questions blank or get help at your county JFS office.

   Complete a telephone interview

   After you apply, your county JFS office will schedule a phone interview (or in-person if requested) and mail you the date and time.

   Submit verification documents

   Your caseworker will send a Verification Request Checklist (JFS 07105) listing the documents and deadline needed to confirm your eligibility.

   Sign a Self-Sufficiency Contract

   Adults and minor heads of household must sign a Self Sufficiency Contract (JFS 03801) or Individual Opportunity Plan (JFS 03004) outlining required work activities to keep receiving OWF.
