How to Apply for TANF in Illinois

Illinois runs TANF through its network of Family Community Resource Centers (FCRCs), and if you're homeless or don't know which office covers you, the state's 24-hour automated helpline can point you to the right one. Illinois also strictly enforces a 60-month lifetime limit on cash benefits that carries over even if some of those months were used in another state, though single parents working 30+ hours a week (35 for two-parent families) can avoid using up their clock.

   Check eligibility

   You must be pregnant or have a child under 19 living with you (18-year-olds must be full-time high school students), live in Illinois, and be a U.S. citizen or meet certain immigration requirements — a caseworker can explain the immigration rules.

   Apply online, by mail, by fax, or in person

   Apply online through the ABE (Application for Benefits Eligibility) system at abe.illinois.gov, or fill out the Request for Cash Assistance form (IL444-2378B) and submit it electronically, by mail, by fax, or in person at your local FCRC.

   Call the helpline if you're unsure where to go

   IDHS runs a 24-hour automated helpline at 1-800-843-6154 (or (866) 324-5553 TTY/Nextalk) that can direct you to your nearest FCRC; a live representative is available weekdays 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

   Go to your FCRC interview

   A caseworker will ask you questions, enter your answers into a computer, print the application for your signature, and ask to see proof such as children's birth certificates, Social Security cards, and paycheck stubs or other proof of income.

   Get your written decision

   IDHS will decide on your application and notify you in writing within 45 days; if approved, benefits are issued on an Illinois Link (EBT) card or by direct deposit.
