How to Apply for TANF in Massachusetts

Massachusetts calls its TANF cash program Transitional Aid to Families with Dependent Children (TAFDC), and DTA makes a point of telling applicants not to wait to gather every document before applying: you can start with just your name, address, and signature, since benefits are backdated to your application date if approved. After you submit, DTA schedules a phone interview (with an interpreter if needed) rather than requiring an in-person visit, and most verification documents can be uploaded later through the DTA Connect app or website.

   Submit an application

   Apply online at DTAConnect.com, by phone with your local DTA office, or in person at a local DTA office or community kiosk (self-service only). You only need your name, address, and signature to start.

   Complete a phone interview

   DTA schedules a phone interview and provides an interpreter if needed. DTA will tell you what documentation to provide after the interview.

   Verify your income and other information

   Submit required documents (income, rent, utilities, childcare expenses) through the DTA Connect app or website, by mail, or with your case manager. Sending documents with your application speeds up processing.

   Receive your EBT card

   DTA sends an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card, sometimes before approval. You can also set up Direct Deposit using DTA's Direct Deposit form (CADD-1) if you have a bank account.

   Get your decision

   DTA approves or denies the application within 30 days and mails a notice. Check status anytime on DTA Connect. Approved households also receive a MassHealth card for each eligible family member.
