How to Apply for TANF in Delaware

Delaware's Division of Social Services runs TANF as a program built around shared responsibility: the state provides financial support and resources, and in exchange most recipients must work or take part in approved work-related activities at least 30 hours a week. Applications go through ASSIST, the same online portal Delaware uses for Medicaid, SNAP, and other benefits, though you can still apply on paper or in person at a State Service Center. Most eligible families can receive TANF for up to 36 months.

   Check basic eligibility

   You must be responsible for a minor child related to you, be in your ninth month of pregnancy, or be an 18-year-old high school student who will graduate before turning 19, and you must meet income and resource guidelines a DSS case manager reviews.

   Submit your application at assist.dhss.delaware.gov, Delaware's online portal for cash assistance, Medicaid, SNAP, and other benefit programs. The same site lets you check if you're likely eligible before applying.

   Download and complete Form 100 (available in English or Spanish) and turn it in, or visit a Delaware State Service Center to begin your application in person.

   Attend an interview with a DSS social worker

   A caseworker will review your household details, income, and resources, and explain any additional requirements based on your situation.

   Meet ongoing program requirements

   To keep receiving TANF you must look for and accept employment when offered, cooperate with the Division of Child Support Services, keep children in school and up to date on vaccinations, and participate in parenting classes.
